Notes
This is Frank Sinatra's third Capitol studio album. It has been widely considered as the first concept album. Its themes touch on the subjects of loneliness and unrequited love. Despite Capitol Records' hesitance of releasing an album with such "dark" themes, it proved to be a commercial success. The album is also viewed as a personal record for Sinatra because of his troubled relationship with his wife at the time, actress Ava Gardner.
Sinatra's album is also significant for being released as a 12" album. (Although it was first released in two-volume sets; as a 10" LP set with one 10" LP in each volume as well as a 45 rpm EP set with two EPs in each volume. The 12"s came soon after.) This made the album one of the first pop records to be issued as a 12". The reason for this was because Sinatra wanted his music to be taken more seriously and seen more as a collection of songs instead of just catchy individual songs put together. Before this, classical music was usually the only music to be released in the 12" format.
The album has been included in many greatest album lists over the years, ranking 282nd in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020 edition). Many music critics highly regard the album as one of Sinatra's greatest efforts. Musicians have also said the album is a favorite of theirs, such as Tom Waits, Marvin Gaye, and B.B. King.

Sinatra made so much unforgettable music over the decades but as a coherent whole, I don't think anything ever topped this album. Absolutely perfect from start to finish.
Wow. Shocked me. I have the Sinatra Acoustic Sounds issue which is amazing and 4 of the Mofi issues and this smokes 2 of the Mofi releases. Tone of his vocals really surprised me.

Nice album, the sound and pressing are of very good quality and if you get a NM or M it is quite and distortion free. These Green Label reissues are usually missing a couple of songs from the original 12" releases so make sure your favorite is not missing in theses. The sound is really good I could only compare to digital and a couple of other re-issues I have but I would highly recommend these especially for the price, you can usually find them in NM for $5 which is a fantastic deal. The big issue with these 1970 Capitol reissues is the (fake stereo) that puts the vocals, strings and horns on the Right and the drums and bass on the Left. There are times when the strings will shift to the middle, but the Left channel is low volume and not used for any solo instruments so it makes for an unbalance mix, but I just play these in Mono and it sound so much better and more even so I would suggest you play in Mono as the originals if you can. This is the same for the 1970 reissues of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole they have the same stereo/mono issue as the Peggy Lee and all sound better played in Mono. I also compared these to some (DOL, Jaz Wax, Wax Time) reissues and the Capitol Green Label sound better if only slightly they have a smoother, bigger sound with a sweeter tone.
how are these allowed to be sold yet other bootlegs are not,, i know europe has public doman laws but discogs usually blocks them,, any record companys that dont pay royaltys get blocked on discogs, why is DOL different?
I have a black label 1955 pressing which has record company stickers indicating a "promotional" release on the jacket and both sides of the record. Does anyone have any information on this? Did they run out of white labels?

To me this version sounds utterly beautiful. Not just because, but also especially for a record nearing 50 min total play time, originally recorded in the fifties! Trust this remaster
(this is for the pressing - not the content...) Holy heck, Capitol! You use the wet tapes and have a song on the end of side one THAT WASN'T ON THE ALBUM! Just depressing. (but not in the way that the album makes you sad. More like watching a friend who should know better doing something undeniably stupid.)
