Sentinel is a God sent example of the Heroes sound and aesthetic. Tumultuous, reasonably distorted 4x4 drums march over doomed life forms. Period. No real progression or a goal to achieve, no climax and not a millisecond to take a fresh breath in. Proper, stellar hard techno with a bulldozer bass line that’ll force any crowd into serving an aural life sentence wrapped inside an acoustic membrane. Hear this track, and if you don’t like it, forget about the remainder of this label’s catalog. Fortunately, I love it, and have no intention of ever leaving my heroic Heroes collection behind. But then again, if that won’t be the case with you, hang the vinyl up on the wall, as the etched robot across the entire B side rocks big time!
Battlefield keeps up with the program, as its remorseless bass cuts down the vital signs of those whose stubbornness enabled them to live past the previous track. Not for long though. There’s a loop dropped halfway through, I guess its purpose being to ease up on the already overwhelming intensity level. The beat drop sounds like two jet fueled icebergs coming at each at maximum velocity and crashing above the Statue of Liberty. It’s not something most of us would like to imagine, I know, but it’s the first thing that fell on my mind.
Sentinel wins out though. Quite probably the best track on the label along with Cloaked and Enemies from [HEROES 01] and Assassins from [HEROES 05], and probably a few others I just cannot remember right now. Personally, I was a pretty big fan, so a fair chunk of the label’s output was very much to my approval!
