The church-like tones of “Biomantric L-If-E” bring an immediate mystery to The Black Dog’s FURTHER VEXATIONS, while the contrast between the deep bass and the bright ringing of “93” and “Stempel” spark them into being. The Black Dog have always exceled at creating and sustaining a mood, and here, they maintain a sheen, like a robot that’s too cool to care anymore.
The breaks of “You’re Only SQL” comes as rhythmic punches, whereas “We Are Haunting” brings out the melody in in quick stabs. But Detroit comes in full force on “CCTV Nation,” and the three part “Northern Electronic Soul” offers a triptych of straight-up techno. “Skin Clock” continues the moody Detroitian tones which soon find their percussive footing but “Dada Mindstab” reintroduces the dark breaks and “Tunnels Ov Set” slows the tempo even further to allow the tender ambience of “Later Vexations” and “Kissing Someone Else’s D.O.G.” to end the album on moody, melodic note.

This is the version I received ordering directly from the Soma website. Anyone know how this differs packaging wise from the proper release I had expected to receive?

Black Dog is still as awesome as ever. They've just found their niche. Spanners was a great album, but it was like they were just trying everything, looking to see what fit. Now they have it.
