Livemiles is one of those landmark Tangerine Dream albums that signify the start or end of an era: in this case, the last recording to be released featuring Chris Franke as part of the band (other than some delayed film scores), and also the last time the band would use the side-long extended suite format for their music.

The authenticity of the first side - The Albuquerque Concert - has been called into question, with audience recordings not matching any of the material presented on the album. Given the longform structure and meandering synth solos, it certainly sounds like one of the band's live concerts, and may have been pieced together from live material performed after Franke's departure (certainly the choices of sounds used tend to match those of the band's other 1988 release, Optical Race.) Regardless, it is a decent slice of late-'80s TD, featuring some striking chord changes and the usual improvisation. The highlight of the side is around 15 minutes, with a slow, emotional section that shows off the band's more dramatic side.

The second side is a truncated version of Chris Franke's last ever show (rumour has it he left the band immediately after the show had finished - taking half their gear with him). As the longest serving member of TD other than Edgar, it's great to hear Franke going out in fine form. The opening part features one of the band's most memorable melodies; the ending features a wonderful improvised interpretation of Dolphin Dance from Underwater Sunlight.

With more stylistic changes afoot in the near future, Livemiles is a last hurrah for the Tangerine Dream lineup and sound that were partially responsible for creating such legendary music.
