This was the gateway album for me into the world of Joni Mitchell. It is an album I am always rediscovering.

A truly beautiful, and according to its topics, remarkably raging album. Joni Mitchell is a notorious perfectionist with everlasting vocal/instrumental/arranging skills; she creates a wide range of tones and overtones - and while 'Dog Eat Dog' is not making the top list of her ultimately loved affairs during a constantly brilliant career, it is a record with its own essential energy through modern renditions of 80s' rock, and still bravely exploring the obscure.

'Good Friends' is probably the most dated song here, yet a rewarding, ear-pleasant listening. Among the list of producers who participated on the album, Thomas Dolby left remarkable presence here. After all, he is one of her truest fans, once paying a stunning new wave hommage with 'The Jungle Line. On 'Dog Eat Dog', sampled sounds and more electronics push to the fore, giving this record an exquisite charm.

Pieces like 'Fiction' (with barked, robotic backing vocals in the song's refrain), 'Tax Free' with a provocative spokesman part, 'Smokin' (Empty, Try Another)' based on simple loops of the cigarette machine, 'Impossible Dreamer' (considered by many to be a tribute to John Lennon) or 'Lucky Girl'... Among these masterpeices, one song stands out in particular - 'Ethiopia'. Subversively wrapped up in easy-listening surrounding with a powerful lyric sheet that hits on you like a ton of bricks.

And by all means, 'Dog Eat Dog' is not just a petty 'recommended listen'. It's a must have. Legendary. Like every Joni Mitchell album.
