1992 - One of my favorite records but I did play Vessels In Distress 45 rpm minus 8 on the Technics turntable

GREAT GREAT 12". I remember when I bought the Apollo LP 'Ambient' which was a compilation album with various artists and remixes from the R&S and Apollo label itself. Funny how the 'ambient genre' came to the horizon and a down tempo electro track like 'The passage' fitted right in....

This reminds me of those young days sitting in my bedroom after midnight pause button taping the radio listening to Colin Favor or Colin Dale. Good to see the Juan Atkins from the first wave of Techno keeping up with his contempories in that second wave era 1990-1993.

The passage is one of my favourite techno tracks of all time. Everything from the bleepy intro and spooky pads to the speaker punishing bassline and surprise breakbeat in the middle. It's still as relevant a track today as it was when it was released. Plus it was a timely demonstration of how a break could be used to good effect in a techno track, rather than the Amen break stuck on a loop.

I have a copy of the Passage played by Colin Favor on Kiss FM London intentionally at 45rpm and it sound great. The track springs into life as a very usable breakbeat/techno gem

I was listening to this last night whilst going through stuff to list on here. This is so, so good. It's absolutely timeless. A masterclass in proper Detroit Techno from the master himself. It just sounds so fresh today. It's probably matured with age actually. It's hard to put into words how good I think this is. Amazing, amazing talent Juan Atkins. This is a piece of history IMO. Absolute perfection.

Totally underrated material from the Techno Godfather Juan Atkins.
At the time Techno music was spreading quickly worldwide and DJ's were often more focused on new genres that were emerging.
Although this is imo an essential Model 500 release.

• The opening track "The Passage" is pure bliss.
An awesome "airy" downtempo techno track that is spiced up with some cool breakbeats, some nice spacy synth sounds and those typical deep atmospheric detroit chord progressions.

• Mind changes is in fact a totally underrated Model 500 track that does not appear in many comps. It really sounds like the missing link of Juan's 80s roots and his future productions. You can hear the early electro new wave influence in this track and experience the futiristic techno "eclosion" vibe.

• At last we finish with "Vessels In Destress" wich is even more 80s influenced but that is still an awesome techno tune.

All in all this EP was maybe at the time just an assemblage of tunes to help the launching of Apollo, a new R&S subdivision, but in the end it stands pretty well against the passage of time and will remain a very solid EP in any collection.

When this came out rave was absolutely killing it but many referred to rave / hardcore / uk breakbeat as techno. I'm
not sure who came up with the true techno title but i can imagine it to be someone at network or kool kat as they had been pushing techno for many years prior to the rave explosion.
"The passage" is an amazingly beauiful track that will always remind me why i love techno like this, shifting from 808 beats to breaks with such deep bass that i remember it playing havoc with sound systems of the day. "Mind changes" is more like older Model 500 where as "Vessels" is more like some of the metroplex releases of the time. Great music from one of the true legends of electronic music.
