Attica Blues' eponymous debut is a well-needed shot of soul, even if it get lumped in with the 'trip hop' craze at the time. But tracks like the sublime "Blueprint" showed that Attica Blues had much more up its sleeve. The thick double bass and drum pattern on "Atlanta" gives that track a nice swoon, while "It's Alright" has a jazzy moodiness. "Medieval" adds some woodwinds and harpsichord into the beat-driven mix, while "3ree (A Means To Be)" goes more upbeat. But most of the time, they keep the mood down low, like on the slow-burning "Tender" which ends on some Bernard Herrmann-like strings. "Pendulum Being" is much more straight-forward in its jazz elements, while "Gone Too Far" hangs entirely on Roba's vocals. A lush, deeply-felt album.
