One of the hidden gems of IDM, Max 404’s LOVE & MATHEMATICS is Detroitian jazz by way of the Netherlands (and Mars). From the first quiet strains of “Quiddity (First Visit)” to the itchy clicks of “Trapped,” you can clearly hear the emotion bubbling under the surface. There’s the lovely jazzy textures and snares of “Quiddity (Second Visit),” which should rightly be in the bag of any downtempo DJ, or the cheekily-titled (but apt) “How to Bluff Your Way into Techno Music.” For those who like a harder edge, “Slut” has a darker aggressiveness. Really, an outstanding album through and through. If you can find it, grab it.
