Reviews
- Created in the nineties by the Dutch progressive rock/metal/whatever mastermind Arjen Lucassen, Ayreon has been somehow a mythical beast within the progressive circles, partly due to its theatrical nature, that would restrict it to inhabit in the studio rather than in the live environment (except for a couple of very special live incarnations) and for having given birth to, at least, a couple of the most important albums of the genre (for me, these would be 'Into The Electric Castle' and 'The Human Equation').
For this instalment of the Ayreon saga, Arjen decided to trace back the story of the species that started all the crazy sci-fi drama that most of the Ayreon's albums use as premise and take us to Alpha, the original planet of the species that would later become the inhabitants of Y and, with the time, also the ones that would cause the human species to rise on Earth.
While not my favourite Ayreon album, I see 'The Source' as one of the most "metal" albums out the project's history, and has plenty of what has made Ayreon to become the above mentioned reference: killer riffs, memorable melodies, nice hooks and chorus that posses a cinematic quality that perfectly fits the background story.
With regards to the voices cast, the highlights here are the presence of one of my favourite singers ever (Russell Allen) together with the great Hansi Kürsch (a hero of my teenage power metal years), Tommy Karevik, Floor Jansen and Simone Simons.
Some of my favourite moments here are the opener 'The Day The World Breaks Down', 'Everybody Dies', 'Run! Apocalypse! Run!', 'Condemned To Live', 'The Dream Dissolves' (great guitar solo in this one!), 'Deathcry Of A Race' (cool Arabic voices by Zaher Zorgati), 'Journey To Forever' and 'The Human Compulsion'.
All in all, a worthy add to the Ayreon saga, and an unexpected twist to the story of Forever, as always wrapped in a magnificent physical edition.
