- THIS BOSTON TRIO of Jeff Goddard (ex-Moving Targets); Gavin McCarthy and Geoff Farina make it all sound so simple. KARATE's title-less songs seem to reflect their style. "The Bed is in the Ocean" is as close to a seamless continuation to "In Place Of Real Insight" they could of made. KARATE's unique sonic experience is filled by carefully placed phases with bends & twists of pure almost didactic guitar lines weaving thru a block of sentences like a pencil thru a picture puzzle maze. Existentially observational pre-bitter pill. Trying to put it all together for the moment pouring it out with a spirited mid-tempo striped down sound with the sweetest middles. Startling beginnings. And abrupt ends. The band's music won't hit you at first (if it does you're the better). It's just that, I didn't notice my bruises 'til it was too late.
