And this is where adventurous ears find the origins of the Towner penned classic Icarus. Icarus was covered by many artists in the 1970s mainly Paul Winter Consort and yes....electronically on Moog etc by Larry Fast aka Synergy.
IMHO this and Solo Concert are the crux of Towner's most amazing compositions and performances. Diary as the title suggest is very personal and the music is comforting, warm like a friends visit during a winter evening. Melancholy yet impregnated with melodic hope. The recording is round and intimate along with Ralph's ability to convey a sense of time and space thru his 12 string/6 string and percussion is sheer genius. This IS an ECM classic hands down!

Istruments are recorded beautifully, bright and natural sounding. The guitar has a full low range which is nice. Stereo separation is nice, but that's easy to do with only two participants. Some creative guitar noises put to good use, especially on "Erg".

      Pressing is nice. Recommended.

One of Towner's best releases, certainly one that shows his chops as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. I really wish he did an album dedicated to the piano because the tracks here where he plays it exclusively is such a welcome surprise (ex: The Silence Of A Candle). Recommended for anyone's 70's ECM collection.
