Reviews
- I own this album, although I have completely forgotten it - obviously for good reason. It's a continuous mix album, of remix versions, but the mix/transitions between tracks isn't done with any real skill or flair.
There's good songs on the album, however, not in the versions chosen - stick to the album versions or other extended/remix versions. None of the versions chosen are the definitive ones, and they're not even good - they're too remixed, and have removed most of the melodies and hooks of the original songs.
Also, suggesting this album has anything to do with the original 'Disco' (1986) is basically fraud. 'Disco' was a proper album of definitive extended versions, whereas 'Disco 2' is just a messy cash-grab, using the inferior remixes.
3/5 - Still better than the post-Very albums, but not exactly good. Listen to a proper continuous dance album instead, such as Tiesto's 'Parade Of The Athletes'. - Edited 2 years agoDisco 2 was my introduction to PSB. It was the first PSB album I bought. I used to LOVE this album. I had heard all PSB's songs as they were released all throughout the 80s and 90s but didn't think enough of any of them to buy PSB albums or single - but Disco 2 was the sound I was hearing in my favourite underground clubs in the early to mid-90s so I played the Disco 2 tape a LOT. Well nearly 30 years later I've given it another listen all the way through and although I still like the song remixes, and although it brings that early/mid 90s prog house vibe, the transitions between most of the tracks is bloody terrible. In 1994 I didn't notice, but now I find it very jarring. Danny Rampling has slammed nearly all the songs into each other which kills the vibe. It's like one of those 90s club mix compilation CDs where 40 tracks are slammed into each other to fit as many as possible on the CD. I think it's a mistake. I'd prefer this album UNMIXED, or at least mixed PROPERLY. It never will be though, and that's unfortunate because the 90s club music will never happen again, it was a very special time when everything was new. The remixes on Disco 2 capture the sound of club prog house in the mid 90s, but between most songs here the mixing just isn't that great.
- I only have this for completion. Some mixes are "okay". When I saw this coming out back in 1994, I thought it would have had IWNDTKOT (7" Inch Version, by the Beatmasters), so that's why I went for it, just to find out that there were some similar cuts to that 7" inch version but actually no sign of that single. The album version was too silly and ridiculous for my taste. After this point I left PSB for a while and ignored it for many years until Fundamental was released.
- Edited 4 years agoI've never been a fan of pet shop boys, but there is something bootleggish about Disco 2 that appeals to me. perhaps neil & chris got their hands on classic mixes like Sasha - Live Vol I or even Ratpack - Happy Hardcore and want their own little rave tape to groove about with.
the choice of Danny Rampling i find a little surprising but the fact this was released officially is even moreso when you take in account that this was a few years before ministry of sound became a household name. Mixed CD's were unusual commodoties until mid 1997.
Exactly how bad is this album happens to be the way you approach it. if you a fan expecting full 12" cuts of pop shop boys, then you won't like it. but if you are a fan of those mixes i listed than i think Disco 2 will have much to appeal. even if you don't like PSB. - I'm glad to see I'm not the 'only' person who thought WTF is THIS after getting it home ?
U take a selection of their re-mixes and blend them altogether into one seamless mix = badly.
Disco [1 !] was un-mixed, so Why was this ?
Was EMI making too much profit off their Singles....a n d to put them out on 'an album' would have killed off their 12'' Singles sales ?
IF there's e v e r an UN-Mixed release of this, I might be interested ! - in no way am i comparing this to "Disco" but i's dire not regardless of the different era just my opinion
- Edited 13 years agoTo me, the worst Pet Shop Boys compilation ever released.
I like all those PSB remixes in their original full length form, and I must admit that some mixed transitions between a few tracks are quite good (from track 5 to 6, or 10 to 11 for example), but that's far from enough to make a good megamix compilation.
As a DJ, Danny Rampling had to adjust the tempo of each track to fade into one another. As a result, songs like "Go West" and "Liberation" are accelerated way too much with no pitch correction. Apart from being far from the true sound of the original remixes, it makes the vocals sound Donald Duck-ish. Unbearably and sadly hilarious.
Furthermore, the megamix has clearly been mixed out of vinyl material, you can hear typical vinyl background noise on some tracks (So Hard). It doesn't meet CD quality standards at all.
As a Pet Shop Boys collector I own that record, but I can't help laughing each time I play this. This is so not serious, almost a bootleg record to me which doesn't deserve the "Disco 2" name at all. - Yet another mix CD with amazing content and sub-par mixing.
Remixes of Pet Shop Boys tracks have always stood the test of time, and been very much at the top of the heap when it comes to originality and production value. The tracks on this disc are no exception. The mixing is horrible though - it's filled with badly timed mixes and abrupt slams - especially between tracks 9 and 10. There was more than enough room to include all the tracks in their full length, as most mixes are missing more than half of their content. - Disco 2 is really great, great to listen and dance to. It's not fair to compare it with Disco, it's from completely different era. The biggest problem for me is that I really don't understand the E Smoove's so-called remix of Liberation, because I haven't found anything in common with the original. Thus, I wouldn't call it a remix. I have to say, however, that the E Smoove's Liberation fits in well. The following track change is maybe the most exciting one on the compilation... A must have for people interested in remixes and PSB.
- In my opinion, this was much better than Disco, as it had some nice remixes from the Very album. Remixers like David Morales, Junior Vasquez, E-Snoove and Beatmasters did a great job on the remixes, so why not showcase them. I do agree though the mix should have been a lot longer, and an unmixed version would have been very cool indeed. Danny Rampling didn't do a bad job - but I felt he could have worked them tracks a bit more, but they were probably too long. The end track is just the climax to a great mix. I still play this CD to this day.
