Track CD3-6 "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (Take 1)" is incorrectly listed as "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (Take 1 And Speech At The End)", but it has no speech ending on this boxset.
Track CD4-19 "Penny Lane (Capitol Records Mono US Promo Mix)" was mastered from a very low quality source.
The replica of the gatefold from 1967 still shows the back cover misprint given on side 1, track 2, as "A Little Help From My Friends" instead of "With A Little Help From My Friends" .

Reviews
- I'll echo the comments here and say that the Blu ray alone is well worth it for this release. MUCH better mastering on the stereo remix. I unfortunately don't have a surround sound system but I'm sure its gorgeous.
- The Surround bluray mix has a DR of 11-12 , the stereo bluray mix is a DR8, the Qobuz hires Stereo version also a DR8. the Stereo CD in this boxset is a DR8 too. the 2009 Mono CD is a 12-13.
so its worthwhile to get this set for the Bluray and the Surround mixes, rip them and play them in Stereo. sounds pretty good to my ears. - Does anyone have an empty box from this set that they would be willing to sell me?
I have managed to acquire the Double LP pressed in Germany, and also the CD/DVD/BluRay set.
Now I would like to store them both in a proper box.
Contact [email protected] - Probably a longshot but does anyone have the Blu-Ray from this box set they're willing to sell? I lost mine, I have all the CDs but my blu-ray in the set dissapeared somewhere in my old house. Would be appreciated..
- ...SHAME ON YOU!! Where is the MONO Hi Rez??? Yes, we have Stereo AND MCH but it´s the MONO mix that is the holy grail regarding this album!!!!..heathens....harumph!
- Edited 7 years agoquestion: I only have the remix vinyl set. For those who have both the vinyl and the deluxe set, what differences should I expect between the vinyl, CD, DVD and Blu-ray versions? Any tunes better or worse from one format to the other?
- So many of the choices made in the new mix are just bizarre. I find it really weird how inconsistent it is. A lot of the time, it seems to favor the right channel for some reason, leaving little in the left and the mix unbalanced. Sometimes they seem to have double-tracked certain track elements that weren't double-tracked in the original mixes, which works in some cases, but in other cases is pretty obviously done to make the mix feel more full than they had the ability to do. Sometimes the drums are in the center, but often they either are hard-panned to the left or jump around the mix like a 5-year-old with a sugar high. Keep in mind, these are drum parts originally recorded onto one track, so it's not like they isolated certain elements of the drums to pan those while keeping the base of the beat in one place--the entirety of the drum track goes back and forth on some songs, which is just bizarre and brings to mind for me the original stereo mix of Are You Experienced, where things get panned back and forth all over the stereo spectrum of single tracks because STEREO IS NEW AND EXCITING. It's not the '60s anymore, and stereophonic sound is the default, no longer considered just a gimmick to sell more speakers. People have certain expectations for stereo recordings, and even if they didn't want to cave to those expectations (and granted, the way the music was originally recorded prevents it in some cases), they could've at least gone with something more consistent.
The mixes also make me question some missed opportunities they had. The Beatles considered the mono mix in its time to be the true way to listen to the album, so why not try to make the new stereo mix mimic that in some ways? They did it with "She's Leaving Home", correcting the speed to match that of the mono version, thus demonstrating that they weren't totally concerned with "heresy", so why not do that with, say, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", putting the flange effect on the vocals like in the mono mix? Nah, instead let's make the tamboura part jump around the stereo field every other note, that'll really wow 'em.
I don't know, I love the packaging of this release (especially love the inclusion of the poster that inspired "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"), and the Sgt. Pepper Sessions that they included were very welcome, and I even like the inclusion of the original mono mix (even if I already own the mono box, and even if I also think they should've included the original stereo mix for the sake of comparison and to make this feel more definitive). The main draw of the set though, the new stereo mix? You're far better off listening to the 2009 remaster, or even the original stereo vinyl if you've got it on hand. If you're just curious about that new mixes, you'd best just stream them on Spotify or something instead, because it's not worth buying this if that's all you want. It's even more disheartening when you consider that the new mixes on the 1 rerelease (The Beatles - 1+) were far superior to this (even if some of those mixes didn't seem to be much changed if at all from the originals), with some of the mixes on that release even being arguably superior to the original mixes. Here's hoping that in future Super Deluxe releases, if they continue to do this (and I certainly hope so, as a Super Deluxe Edition of the White Album seems like the best shot we've got of finally getting to hear "Carnival of Light"), they're a lot less messy with the new mixes.
One last note, it's a bit disappointing that such an expensive set didn't include even a single vinyl too--gonna be really angry if in a few months they announce an Even More Super Deluxe Edition that includes two vinyls or something. - Edited 7 years agoThey really could have added the vinyl to this box set as well. It is expensive enough. Pure profiteering. Besides that I enjoy the 5.1 mixes. I understand it's not everyone's taste.
- Edited 7 years agoDon't get me wrong, the packaging of this boxset is as perfect as you can get. But for the content iself:
I like and understand some of the Ideas Giles Martin had for his new mix of Pepper. The execution and final product leave a lot to be desired though.
Every element is constantly trying to outdo the other in terms of volume. Everything is just loud, all subtlety is lost in a very claustrophobic master that makes me feel uncomfortable. Even worse: The allready loud mix "of course" had to be mastered with even more digital limiting, making the tracks even louder and less dynamic. Cause radio domination + people with their iPhones don't care anyway, right ?
If you can't see the crescendos in "A Day In The Life"s waveform anymore, you've gone too far.
What really grinds my gears is how even the Blu-Ray "hi-res" audio files you only get with a 115$ set STILL have the same digital limiting applied.
The only release that was spared of it, is the new double-vinyl set. Why didn't they use that master for the blu-ray ? Seems totally pointless and majorly lackluster to me.
The outtake discs are sounding much better. Much less compression was applied here, but they also were tinkered with a little by that. On these it's at a tolerable level though.
A real headscratcher is the US Promo Mix of "Penny Lane" at the end. Obviously this was recorded from a heavily worn source, probably an acetate. It's one of the worst quality tracks that was ever released in the Beatles catalogue. I bet about 99% of all the original promo singles would have been a better audio source.
Overall, this release was a good approach, but in the end it "fell flat on it's butt" by very questionable audio-quality decisions.
I'm sure there's plenty of people who are going to love it, that's why I now sold it to a different soul.
I hope If they continue these Album-remixes, they will aim towards more "audiophile" (hate that term) people with the Deluxe Sets / Blu-Ray masters.
