Reviews
- Edited 12 years agoI don't know if anyone else is interested, but a lot of the art that grabs my attention contains esoteric elements, and I like to investigate them. After first listening to this album, I wanted to know who Maldoror was.
The Wikipedia article called: "Les Chants de Maldoror" gives the following information. (There's more. This is a snippet.)
"Les Chants de Maldoror (The Songs of Maldoror) is a poetic novel (or a long prose poem) consisting of six cantos. It was written between 1868 and 1869 by the Comte de Lautréamont, the pseudonym of Isidore Lucien Ducasse. Many of the surrealists (Salvador Dalí, André Breton, Antonin Artaud, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Max Ernst, etc.) during the early 20th century cited the novel as a major inspiration to their own works.
The work concerns the misanthropic character of Maldoror, a figure of absolute evil who is opposed to God and humanity, and has renounced conventional morality and decency. The iconoclastic imagery and tone is typically violent and macabre, and ostensibly nihilistic. Much of the imagery was borrowed from the popular gothic literature of the period, in particular Lord Byron's Manfred, Charles Robert Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer and Goethe's Faust. Of these figures, the latter two are particularly significant in their description of a negative and Satanic anti-hero who is in hostile opposition to God. The last eight stanzas of the final canto are in a way a small novel dealing with the seduction and murder of a youth."
I'm new to this Web site. This is my first post. If I have broken any rules about what can be discussed, it was unintentional. - Edited 19 years agoI doubt I will ever listen to a scarier record than "Nature Unveiled". The distant Gregorian chants, echoed like they were inside a cathedral, David Tibet's filtered and effected demonic voice, metal percussions, bells, gongs, noises and an allucinated atmosphere is what waits for you on the first side. On the other side there's a crescendo of spastic prayers, children weepings, more distorted Gregorian chants, drills, and a final total chaos of almost unbearable tension. If you wonder what Current 93 have to do with industrial music, here's the asnwer. This is probably the music Bach would have composed if he was born in the 20th century.
I love Tibet's folk songs and magick poetry, I even respect his turning back to Christianity after having contempted it so much in his early works, but "Nature Unveiled" will forever be my favourite Current 93 album. This LP changed my life, definitely. Nothing that came after every matched it.
