If you can stand the noise it's comparable to his digital-only release Tunings For Falling Asleep, only these are the ones you couldn't get to sleep from. But I'd agree that this is almost unlistenable and more like snippets of things he could expand into songs instead of proper songs themselves. The exception is the tracks "Short Forgotten Produk Trk" and "2nd Neotek Test B + 11". The first is a remix (or earlier mix, or different mix in the same series) of track 3 on Syro ("Produk 29"). I think the other track is referencing tracks 7 and 8 off of Orphaned Deejay Selek, however "Neotek" could just be the type of keyboard both were made on. Either way these 2 tracks sound like "normal" Aphex Twin tracks.
Excellent release. I have it in 24Bit 44Khz. The sounds are brilliant and I think what Richard did was to compile a set of sounds so you can place them into mixing software, and let your mind run wild on what you can produce from these tracks.
Do not pay the asking price, not sure what the other reviewers are saying really. If this is your 'fave aphex twin record', you mustn't own any of his other work. Best way to describe this is snippets or a collection of strange sounds. its not a coherent LP. In a way it reminds me of the Gescom Minidisc. I'd play it once then it would end up collecting dust on the shelf. If you don't own any aphex don't let this be your starting point, with £250 you could walk into HMV and buy his entire catalogue of better releases. This is for silly completists who would buy the sound of Richard farting in a bath for a £1000 if it meant they could own every sound he's ever created. Musically i'd pay a fiver for it just to play it once, then end up selling it on to save space for much better records.
This is one of my fave Aphex releases, it's him in free thinking mode, less rules than any other release of his, fascinating tracks. Just put headphones on and lose yourself into an awesome world of strange emotions and beautiful soundscapes. Some of the sounds he gets are mind bendingly good, if your open minded enough to accept it.
