Reviews
- This was the album that turned The Psychedelic furs into big stars in America. And yes, it is everything that that implies! In my opinion things had been starting to go wrong ever since the band had relocated to the U.S. but this was their absolute nadir. Everything about this record is glossy and overproduced from the cover to the appalling rerecording of Pretty in pink. As Richard Butler's lyrics became less opaque than ever before it also became apparent that he had nothing of interest to say. He claimed that touring this album made him ill and I can quite believe it. The whole feel of this album is fake and contrived. In fact the only good thing about this album for me, is that afterwards there was obviously a complete reevaluation of what The Furs stood for. Original drummer, Vince Ely, returned and shone on the follow up Book of days LP. This was an album produced by David M Allen who had just produced The Cure's Disintegration, which shared an autumnal mood, and he seems to have perfectly suited The Furs. To my mind, Book of days is a superior record to Disintegration. It is also arguably their strongest record.
Btw, for a good few months of my life, Midnight to Midnight, along with Peter Murphy's Love Hysteria, was rarely off my turntable. There goes my credibility!
