This was my first listen to Leo Smith. I bought it on the strength of a review in a nytimes top ten of 2017 list. Wadada is a fine trumpeter, has his own sound and a beautiful tone. Najwa reminds me of the early 70s records of Miles like Big Fun Jack Johnson Bitches Brew etc. The first track I thought would have been better without the first 6 minutes of track but had started (instead) with the long atmospheric ending. The band on this album is fantastic, but sometimes the guitars and especially the drummer are kind of too busy. Adam Rudolph really added a lot by just adding a little whereas Pherroan Aklaff could have been less busy and little more um (soulful ?-not the right word but...), at times Pherroan sounds a liitle mechanical. While I definitely though the first six minutes or so of this album was out of place, the rest of the cuts could have gone a bit more. Great album and fantastic recording, I think this album should have a buzz going on with the listening public bu so far all I've seen in the top ten list in ny times. Anyway- really recommend.
