This is one of those beautiful records that I first heard about when it was reviewed by Scott Brown in the Dream Magazine back in 1997. Quite surprisingly, Scott didn't think much about it, as it didn't sound like Lenny's style (which is fair enough) and he was miffed about the B2 track, Were You Ever Young? Scott Brown thought it was weird and rated the record a 6 or 7 out of 10, so I didn't take much notice of the record. A few months later, Sydney Hardcore DJ, Spellbound, was hammering an amazing track in his quality sets, I found out this track was Forgotten Moments by Lenny Dee. Spellbound includes this track in his excellent mixtape Sex, Drugs And Hardcore Volume 2.
Please take this with a grain of salt: The story I was told about this track was Lenny Dee had come out of a long term relationship and he was quite distraught. He wrote the track as part of the healing process. Whilst the track is by Lenny Dee, most of the credit really should go to the talented and heavily underrated producer, Steve Gibbs. Lush and gorgeous production blending Hardcore and Hard Trance. It was really good to see Sharkey help Steve out and further explore this sound. And he's an Aussie!
Is Forgotten Moments the most beautiful Hardcore song ever made? Well if it isn't, its gotta be up there. The high prices for this record is unfortunately warranted. One of my favourite Hardcore tunes and the perfect track to finish a set with, that outro always gives me goosebumps.
PS: The Ophidian remix of Forgotten Moments is a pretty epic 10 minute masterpiece in its own right. It took Ophidian THREE years to complete the remix as he understood the magnitude of the track he was remixing, so he wanted to get everything right. One of the very few brilliant updated remixes of a classic Hardcore Techno track.
The cover looks like a picture of a painting, taken at an art gallery. If you look close, you can see a white tag that looks like a price or identification tag in the bottom right corner. The dots in the outer picture could represent the field of energy in the universe. If you look at the inner picture, you can see that the dots connect in a way that forms a leef. In that leef you see the tree of life in part humanoid form, holding the hands together to represent the duality of the universe like life and death, sun and moon, darkness and light, order and chaos, in the same way as man and woman
In picture 4 (seems like the same art gallery/exibition as picture 1), you can see a serpent. It represents the wisdom of the universe and the never ending circle of life and death. Usually this is represented in a way, that the serpent "eats" is own tail, what is not shown in the picture here. The dots here connect in a way that it represent an eye, and within the serpent. In western socity, the story of adam and eve (also with the tree of life that holds the apple of knowlege) is a known explanation and gives more inside about this topic.
An occultist could intepret the formation of the hands you can see in picture 1 as the triangle/pyramid, also shown by many celebreties with their hands. The pyrimad with the all-seeing-eye can be found on the dollar bill as most known example. Together with the eye and the serpent found in picture 4, it could represent this "all-seeing-eye".
In general, the serpent of wisdom and the pyramid (the best geometrical form to send and receive electricity)are not signs of the occult but are also used be them. In my opinion the painter does not make a clear statement. The origins of its meanings are universal/spritual/technical and go back thousand of years.
About the track
From picture 2 :
"This record is dedicated to Tanja (seems like a german woman), for giving me the strength - I did not possess to Forget Moments of my past - and for giving me the power to look forward. Ich Liebe Dich (I love you)"
These strong emotions, hope and hopeless, love and hate, handling the past and looking into the future, can be felt in "Forgotten Moments" as it was meant to be fighting out an inner conflict.
I met Lenny Dee last year on a gig and had some interesting conversations while smoking outside with him.It does not seem to me that he is the way (satanist/occult), some of his other covers and releases may indicate.
I my opinion he is a human who experienced and knows pain and darkness, but has no intent to inflict these on others. The text in picture 2 also indicates that "Forgotten Moments" is about construction, keeping the order and having hope and love - instead of seeking chaos and destruction, what brings me back to the tree of life and the duality.
Even if Lenny Dee did not made this one, the music and the text has his name on it and so is the message.
Forgotten Moments is a great piece of art! This must be the most emotional hardcore track ever.
I don't know what Lenny Dee was feeling at that time, but he had to be in love, sad, angry and very happy at the same time. The melody gives me goosebumps all over my body everytime I hear it. It's so beautiful. The kick is just perfect, not too loud but also powerful enough to kick ass. All the sounds around the melody fit just perfect and give the track a great atmosphere.
The A-side is so great, that it wasn't necessary to add a B-side to this release. And to be honest... I can't imagine what it sounds like. Just never got past Forgotten Moments.
And besides that it's definately a must-have for all vinylsniffers out there. Classic piece of work!
(Nice fact... Forgotten Moments was also used as the base for the Magix Music Maker - Lenny Dee Edition)
