A true Brasilian gem! Ranging from funk to soul to boogie and beyond, this little known album by Amazonas state native Pedrinho Sampaio titled “Um Grito De Guerra” is the collection of musical works that were created for a theatrical show by the same name. The show was focused around a few points, but the primary focus was the rescue of the Amazonian identity and the protection and defense of the environment against Transamazonica.  Pedrinho handles producing and arranging, along with keyboards and vocals.  Everything about this record (recording quality, back story, depth, instrumentation) make it absolutely incredible.

There seems to be some ambiguity around when this record was actually made.  Everywhere I’ve read has it credited as 1979, which was the year the music was created and the show premiered.  According to some writings I’ve found from Pedrinho, there were a few different editions of the show that were performed over the course of four years.  In 1979-1980 the show was in Manaus (the capital of Amazonas). There were also versions in Brasilia in 1980 and in Rio in 1981-1982.  That all said, on the back cover there is a printed signature from Pedrinho with the year below stating 1982.  I believe the record was actually recorded and released in 1982, not 1979.  Further looking at the lineup of the shows that were played and when, the musicians of the shows in Rio in 1982 are the same musicians that were credited on the back cover. The lineups changed with the shows over those few years, and with the exception of Adriano Giffoni and Pedrinho himself, the others were not part of the original musician list in 1979.
