Amazing album of dense atmospherics and highly amusing samples. Some of the most creative work from Cevin Key and cohorts ever. The album cover is based on this old Peter and the Wolf record jacket:
    • this is really the last classic download record. like most download records, this must be listened to through headphones and/or at a high volume in order to make any sense, as all (all!) of the interesting parts of the music are buried under the drum & bass exterior. there are legal reasons circulating around the death of dwayne goettel, who appears prominently on this record, as to why the record was released under the name "cevin key" and not under the name "download". note the weird imagery on the cover disc: this is music for cats and not puppies, there are puppies chasing ducks and there's an ogre that appears as though he can't keep up. strange.

there's a massive dub influence here to the point that the record is dedicated to the island and people of jamaica. yet, beyond this note and the obvious observation that this is electronic music, which is what would be expected from cevin key, this is a difficult record to listen to at all, let alone analyse. if anything sets this apart from the download records that preceded it, it's that this record is much less aggressive and much less harsh, even when considering genesis' vocals, which are probably the most contemplative of the work he's done with key. the short snippets of strange questions and unusual declarations really take the soundscapes within them up to a totally different level. it is worth pointing out that beauty is the enemy draws heavily from the picture of dorian gray and appears to be a little bit of a satirical commentary about key himself in some kind of backwards and ironic manner. cevin key has certainly never been interested in traditional concepts of perfection and beauty, except perhaps in the context of ripping them apart and sparking them up.

most key/goettel projects outside of skinny puppy (and, to a lesser extent, within skinny puppy) are loaded with comical pot references and this disc is no different; herbalist rule, which sounds like inebriated people dancing on a beach under a piercing sun, is followed by a tongue-in-cheek and slightly irritated explanation that greenhouse gasses, as interesting as something like that may sound to a certain kind of teenaged pothead that has experienced something like a hotbox, are not marijuana related at all.

yet, the highest points on the disc are the tangerine dream, kraftwerk and even tony banks influenced synthesizer tracks. there are only a couple of them and they're loaded up near the front and end of the disc, which is almost a trick as the middle part of the disc is much more chaotic, but they provide the disc with a certain level of consistency and integration that makes the disc feel less like a last sorting through of the download source material, essentially a collection of outtakes, and more like a polished product.

the last track can only be described by the word "awesome". it needs headphones.

you have to approach this with an open or damaged mind, but if you like abstraction in your music then there's no question that you'll love this record.
