'Medium' opens a doorway to the other side
Ghostly exhibit explores the means by which the living communicate with the dead
Take a headlong plunge into the unknown as the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University opens wide the doorway to another dimension. Curated by the team at ZMA, “Medium” assembles a long list of artists including Stephanie Dowda, Lacey Prpić Hedtke, Carrie Mae Weems and more to create their own original works based on authentic 1920s séance transcripts, Cold War-era bone records and other haunting sounds and visions, culled largely from the University of West Georgia's parapsychological archives. The show explores the means by which the living communicate with those who have passed on to the other side, and the role that mediums play in that discourse.
A vinyl LP, titled Medium: Paranormal Field Recordings and Composition, 1907-2017, serves as a sonic artifact and catalog for the show. Curated by artist and musician Ben Coleman, the LP features previously unreleased recordings of poltergeist activity provided by the Society for Psychical Research in the United Kingdom, along with compositions by Eluvium, Michael Esposito, Laura Cannell, CM von Hausswolff and more. It's a one-of-a-kind fusion of visual and sonic art for Atlanta that's not be missed — in this life or the next. - Light In The Attic
‘Medium: Paranormal Field Recordings and Compositions, 1901-2017’ is a sonic reaction to the Zuckerman Museum of Art’s ‘Medium’, a group exhibition of work by artists exploring the paranormal as their primary subject matter.
Medium considers how intangible vestiges of the past complicate, and in fact, haunt our contemporary world. A familiar interpretation of this persistent and disruptive presence is the ‘ghost.’ The Spiritualist movement of the late 1900s promulgated the belief that ghosts were not only able to communicate with the living, but were inclined to do so. Furthermore, those amongst the living known as mediums could communicate with them.
Sound recording has been intertwined with Spiritualism from its inception. Thomas Edison caused a stir in 1920 when he informed a journalist that he was working on a ‘spirit phone.’ With hindsight, it might appear that he had already achieved this with the invention of the phonograph in 1877; early recording technologies give us access to the voices and sounds of over 150 years, through many generations, and entire lives now passed.
‘Medium: Paranormal Field Recordings and Compositions, 1901-2017’ brings together original works from musicians, composers, and other sonic artists who operate within the liminal spaces between art and the paranormal; from clairaudient musical psychics to researchers of Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). Also featured are compelling and previously unreleased field recordings from parapsychology archives in the US and Europe, including the infamous Enfield Poltergeist (1977-1979), and audio from a wax cylinder recording made in Siberia in 1901 that is considered by experts to be the very first EVP recording. - BLEEP

Medium: Paranormal Field Recordings and Compositions, 1901-2017 collects together some of the most exquisitely claustrophobic and spectral recordings to ever be etched into wax. The recordings contained set out to consider how intangible vestiges of the past complicate, and in fact, haunt our contemporary world.
Produced as the sonic counterpart to the Zuckerman Museum of Art’s ‘Medium' exhibition. Medium: Paranormal Field Recordings and Compositions contains a selection of nocturnal recordings that go a long way to educate on the intertwining links between sound recording and spiritualism throughout the decades. While the accompanying sleeves notes detail the history of The Spiritualist movement of the late 1900s and the use of mediums as vessels to express the musings of 'ghosts'. The audio captured on the vinyl contains fascinating abstractions from parapsychology archives in the US and Europe, including the infamous Enfield Poltergeist (1977-1979), and audio from a wax cylinder recording made in Siberia in 1901 that is considered by experts to be the very first EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) recording.
True teeth chattering tracks that will find a home in the darkest corner of your record collection. Listen to within the dead of night for maximum impact.
