The description of this album should be edited. The vinyl is black, and not red as indicated. Where can one make a suggestion of doing that? I’m kind of green when it comes to Discogs.

Loving this record! saw Saxon on the Priest Firepower tour and picked up the CD of Thunderbolt. Just got the release on red vinyl now and it sounds great! solid album not too long. good lenght of songs too. Bif sounds great, guitars sound great. It will get multiple plays here.

Solid, if unexceptional, modern Saxon album

Released in 2018, THUNDERBOLT is the 22nd album by England’s Saxon, whose recording history dates back to 1979 with their self-titled debut.

The band never really flew in North America despite one of metal’s greatest anthems in 1981’s “Denim and Leather.” The album DENIM AND LEATHER was my first exposure to the band. But I quickly became disinterested in Saxon because they took a commercial turn with CRUSADER (1984) to DESTINY (1988). They won back my respect, though, with later releases like UNLEASH THE BEAST (1997).

THUNDERBOLT is a solid, if unspectacular, modern release. The title track is a driving opener. “The Secret of Flight” is a highlight with its “Wasted Years”-like intro. Other notables include the epic “Nosferatu” (with a ‘raw version’ included at the end of the disc); the aggressive “Predator” with it’s interesting mix of regular and gruff vox; the “Heaven and Hell”-ish “Sons of Odin”; the simplistic-yet-kinetic “Sniper”: and “A Wizard’s Tale.”

Bottom line: This is an enjoyable, competent, consistent album from this ‘old guard’ NWOBHM group. What more could you ask for from a band whose singer is pushing freakin’ 70 (Biff is 67 as of this writing).

        GRADE: B

Great release, listened via stream weeks ago and enjoyed it. Just got the red vinyl and it looks and sounds amazing. I’m really impressed with this album after listening to them for four decades they are still putting out killer shit! Side 1 in my opinion is the best one they have put out in a few albums. I’m catching them open for Priest in two weeks and look forward to hearing these tracks live.
