Reviews
- The first record I ever purchased, this album has especial significance to me. However, it’s longing and haunting synthesizer, forgotten and piercing violin… are of the classiest and most dedicated variety. Truly some of the most beautiful and mysterious music I have had the joy of hearing. I shall continue to collect many more works from Mr. Ponty. The album starts with the industrious and driven “Demagomania”, and moves forward very purposefully into “In Case We Survive” as though in story. It seems perhaps some sort of spaceship has crashed. On the next song, “Forms of Life”, a mysterious and exciting sense of wonder at the world surrounding and unique oddities contained within is felt, before “Peace Crusaders” creates a climatic and yet still relaxed feel, very enthusiastic and enjoyable. I’ve heard it said that Ponty’s style had grown stale by this point, and perhaps it is rose-tinted goggles with which I say this; I sheerly disagree and must protest this in it’s entirety. This is a true Masterpiece of a conceptual jazz work.
The album smoothly and soulfully moves through, easily lifting the spirits of all those in range of its magical aural quality. Pressing is bright and plays perfectly. Labels quality, standard Atlantic.
From here we see the inner workings of the planet arrived at, mini-episodes of “Happy Robots” and “Shape up your mind” leading into the tranquil and pensive last two tracks on the album. A very inexpensive and worthy addition to the collection, and one you shall not regret.
10/10

🤖🕊🌎 - Is there any reason this album has not been remastered anywhere? Seems Wounded Bird skipped this as well as Warner Japan, with this and Taste for Passion being the two to have never been re-released as a remaster. When I saw Mr. Ponty in concert, he alluded to this album representing 'dark times' in his life. I also wonder if the master tapes were compromised at all...?
