- overrated album with 3 good songs TEARDROP, INERTIA CREEP and ANGEL
i bought this album in 1998 as a teen and did not expect that it will become one of the most critical praised albums of the 90s
even ROLLING STONE magazine listed it on their 500 greatest albums list - Is the reissue already available in the US? Amazon was taking pre-orders and now it says out of stock....
- great album. the only one mistake is "exchange". i would rather "reflection" from "inertia creeps single"
- Absolutely classic album by massive attack. This album is voted one of the most sensual/sexual/love making albums of the past two decades. Great production, reminds me of a neo noir film or opium den soundtrack. If you like this, listen to 100th window, the album after this.
- Edited 17 years agoI still can't believe how fresh "Mezzanine" is, nine years after its release. As much as I love "Blue Lines" and "Protection", neither of them is nearly half as perfect as this one. An essential mix of distorted guitars, deep basses, massive percussion and haunting, oniric samples. The atmosphere is so dark and hazy, that one almost feels it physically. Like slow descent into quicksands... What more can I say? "Mezzanine" remains a pure MASTERPIECE, simply a must-have.
- Edited 2 years agoPerhaps it's the familiarity effect but I always seem to prefer the earlier work of any given artist. One of few exceptions is this, Massive Attack's third album. Sure, there are classic tracks aplenty on its predecessors, 'Blue Lines' and 'Protection', but to me those LPs can't compete with the superbly moody atmosphere that pervades 'Mezzanine'. Big brooding basslines, heavy dub percussion, thrashy guitar and impassioned vocals are all fused here to very great effect. The group's next album, '100th Window', is good and treads similar territory but ultimately feels like a diluted version of this masterpiece.
The dark poetic intonations of the band members on 'Mezzanine' are complemented by guest vocals, most notably the one and only Liz Fraser out of Cocteau Twins on the incomparable single track 'Teardrop' and Jamaican veteran Horace Andy on reworkings of his own 70s reggae tracks 'A Quiet Place' (itself a cover of John Holt who duly receives a writer credit here) and 'You Are My Angel'. After contributing to all of Massive Attack's studio albums, Andy added another connection by making his own version of 'Safe From Harm' (from 'Blue Lines') for his 2022 album which even references those lyrics in its main title - 'Midnight Rocker'.
Two decades later, 'Mezzanine' remains a favourite for urban walks after dark. The two shorter "Exchange" tracks lighten the overall tone - my playlist omits these.
