Fans of Umwelt probably grossly overlooked this because it has few beats and none of the dancefloor burners that he has become recognised for. Instead of the usual distorted electro rhythms and face-melting Acidlines, Abandon In Places has eight tracks of moody, melancholic synth layers, melodic TB-303 and subtle hi-hats over virtually no kickdrum whatsoever. That makes all those tracks perfect segways to bridge two halves of a set, or even great intros. In fact, it even works as an album to listen to in one sitting. Great job. Ignore at your own peril.
