I was given this in 1996 by a friend who didn't really like it. Should I ever sell it, I'll buy him a pint!

I found this album in a used record shop for $15 in the very early 00s. I bought it on a whim, mostly because I liked the cover art so much. Ironically I almost didn't buy it because I thought it was too expensive. Little did I know what I had stumbled upon, and I'm not talking about the insane asking price 20 years later. Archive were never merely "trip hop" but so many things (particularly from the UK) got saddled with that tag in the years after the runnaway success of Portishead's "Dummy." Londinium is deep, organic downtempo. It's "electronic" sure, but so much of the sound synthesis could be the work of a prog rock band in their spare time (visions of what would come for Archive in later years.) I think I prefer Take My Head, the followup album (which is equally expensive on vinyl) but this one has stood the test of time pretty spectacularly, for nearly a quarter century. I'm not sure I can condone paying for the vinyl version, but getting a CD copy is essential. I do agree, this album (and in fact, Archive's entire early catalog) could use a repress desperately. There's certainly a market for it.

I picked up this album on wax for £40 last year- still stands the time as one of my fave trip hop albums ever conceived. I originally heard 2 of the tracks ("Londinium" and "so few words") on a VHS to promote the Playstation's first few games of '96 and was hooked from the word go. its a shame that asking price is really high, as it is a wonderful piece of art. like many trip hop bands of that era line up changes meant the band would go into a different direction musically but this remains a great piece of art for its time.
