At the time "New Grass" was released it was received rather hostilely by devoted Jazz-fans and critics. It is a defiant record indeed in which Jazz, Soul and Funk are mixed in an often frantic, almost psychedelic way. It reminds a.o. of the music of Captain Beefheart and Zappa, Funkadelic or even Frusciante... "New Grass" stays spirited and fresh, its inventiveness, originality and authenticity stay surprising. One is inclined to replay the record or parts of it straight away when the disc is running out...it's haunting although it asks some time to reveal all of its headstrong hidden beauty... and not to overlook: its humour!
