I still have my original album that I bought at my local record shop. Spike Lee did a documentary on Michael Jackson that mainly focused on the making of this great album.

This is the true Michael Jackson classic album, the others may have propelled him to global superstar status but they don't come close to this.

In 1978, Michael Jackson, the most talented member of the Jacksons (formerly known as The Jackson 5) had managed to steer the musical career of his brothers thanks to 'Destiny' (see my review of this album). However, he was not fully satisfied with it: he aspired to something else. Something much better and much higher. Specifically, he sought to restart his solo career, a facet which remained parked since 1975, year in which he published his last work with Motown, 'Forever, Michael'. In short, the next challenge (for Michael) was -as it couldn´t be otherwise- to achieve full recognition from critics and the public flying solo.

And he was determined to achieve this goal with the man he had met during the recording sessions of the film 'The Wiz' that same year: Quincy Jones, his brand new producer. Both spent part of 1978 and 1979 on developing the first of the works for which nowadays Michael Jackson is listed as the King of Pop: 'Off the Wall' (originally it was supposed to be called 'Girlfriend').

By the time Jones and Jackson collaborated for the first time -in order to create 'Off the Wall'-, Michael was receptive to take risks, due to the fact that he did not want to play the same sort of music perfomed by the Jacksons. And he did it using a fresh and new look that immediately seduced and attracted public and media attention for his stellar premiere: black tuxedo and pants, a white shirt that matched his socks (following the trend of the great dancer Fred Astaire) and, above all, black loafers as Jackson's hallmark until the end of his days. Anyway, just something simply sophisticated and glamorous.

The same could be said of the album. Ten tracks, each one of them with a revolutionary, vibrant sound and such a irresistible instrumental arrangement that has stood the test of time. A timeless work. A sublime piece of art. Definitely, a masterpiece.

'Off the Wall' -which is based on R&B, disco, funk and dance pop- sold around twenty million copies worldwide, primarily in the U.S. and the UK, being the first album in history to post five songs in the top ten on Billboard. The most remembered by the public are Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough (Michael's second #1, after Ben), Rock with You (Jackson's third #1), Workin' Day and Night, Off the Wall and She's Out of My Life. But we should not forget such memorable and exquisite pieces such as Get on the Floor, I Can't Help It, or Burn This Disco Out, a good closing for the album. 'Off the wall' was assisted by Bruce Swedien, Rod Temperton, Paul McCartney (Girlfriend's lyrics), Patti Austin (vocals on It's the Falling in Love) and Stevie Wonder (I Can't Help It's lyrics).

'Off the Wall' is considered one of the best albums of all time and certainly one of the best works in Michael Jackson's discography. I give the album five out of five stars (5/5) and each track receives the following rating:

-Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough -M. Jackson-: 10/10.
-Rock with You -R. Temperton-: 10/10.
-Workin' Day and Night -M. Jackson-: 8/10.
-Get on the Floor -M. Jackson; L. Johnson-: 8/10.
-Off the Wall -R. Temperton-: 9/10.
-Girlfriend -P. McCartney-: 6/10.
-She's Out of My Life -T. Bahler-: 9/10.
-I Can't Help It -S. Wonder; S. Greene-: 8/10.
-It's the Falling in Love -C. Bayer Sager; D. Foster-: 7/10.
-Burn This Disco Out -R. Temperton-: 7/10.

Off the wall (GLOBAL AVERAGE): 8.30/10.

The best:
a) Here is presented a young, vital, energetic and peppy Michael Jackson, who wants to take on the world. And he succeeds.
b) His look (as I mentioned a few lines ago): black tuxedo and pants, a white shirt that matched his socks and black loafers. MJ's brand had been created -being recognized all around the world-.
c) The strength and purity of the songs, which have not aged the least.
d) The duo between Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones.
e) The best was yet to come (with the release of 'Thriller').

The worst:
a) Nothing! But I would have included, in addition to the ten songs on the disk, Sunset Driver, published in 2004 in 'The Ultimate Collection'.

The 'Off The Wall' release [S EPC 83468] was printed on an Epic orange label.

This is a 'Strictly Limited Edition' LP release and comes with a 7" Picture Disc [S EPC 12-7135]
with the track entitled 'You Can't Win' Part 1 on Side A and Part 2 on Side B taken from the film
"The Wiz".

I presume that the 7" Picture Disc only came with the Limited Edition release and was not sold separately.
