Underrated gold that is better than some Blue Notes or Impulses released at the same time. On one of those labels this would be classic. Beautiful playing all around. And that goes for his other Lps as well. Just not appreciated In the US for some reason. If you see a copy just get it.

The superlative descriptions are spot on. This is so good, it’s just outrageously underrated. Soloes jump out of the deep stereo image. Being an original first pressing from the 70s makes it all the more impressive in terms of its fidelity - the sound is rich and reverberant. It has its share of “out” moments, but also a sensibility that keeps you engaged. I think every of spiritual soul jazz, not to mention any jazz fan in general should hear it.

Hard to overstate how good this album is. Recording quality is A+. You really hear the space between the instruments and Nathan Davis plays at a very high level throughout. This album rewards those listening to it on a good sound system. Agree with an earlier poster that if released on a label like Blue Note, this would be considered a classic.

This album is incredible. Sublime. It desperately needs a good, authorized reissue to get the exposure it deserves. That’d probably reduce the value of my OG, but I don’t care about that. The 2017 isn’t highly regarded.

If this was released by Blue Note in the 1960s, it would be an all-time classic. It’s that good. I’m sure some people would knock it for the vocal track, but that’s also fantastic.

His other from the Pittsburgh studio, 6th Sense from the 11th House, is also amazing and desperately needs a reissue. There are aspects of 6th Sense I prefer over Makatuka when I’m in the mood for something a little more “out,” but, as a whole album, Makatuka is just gorgeous and probably gets the nod as more appealing across different musical tastes..

My cover doesn't have Stereo beneath LPS 1000 in the upper right on the back cover. Anyone else?

3 words — Gorgeous sounding album! Some cool mixing and sly effects going on that make each track a sonic treat. It’s more like a dream of a jazz album than a recording of a performance. Meanwhile I’m not sure if there is tape ‘print through’ is bleeding on the 2nd track or is it an effect, kind of like Zeppelin’s “Whole Lot of Love” in which the previous taped vocals bleed into the final recording, but in this case it’s a horn instead of a voice. I’m thrilled that this thin disc of vinyl from the 1970’s sounds bold and rich, I’m not wishing that it was a better master or pressing, my copy has a small amount of surface noise, but it’s not annoying, that sound on vintage albums just makes me feel warm and cozy. Still this pressing pretty much has all the dynamics and 3D voodoo that one would want on a AAA jazz album. I hope the master is still in good shape so that a audiophile version could be made and many others can enjoy this album on vinyl.
