Reviews
- I'm usually not a fan of live albums. But Sill's discography is so sparse and her songs so good that I welcome the opportunity to hear alternate versions of them. And I was definitely not disappointed by this. In fact, it exceeded my expectations.
For the listener, a benefit of Sill's lack of fame is that her audiences were small. Thus, the obnoxious crowd noise that ruins most live albums is kept to a bare minimum here, leaving her songs to sound just as intimate as their studio versions. She also talks to the audience a little bit about some of the songs and her songwriting process, which can be very interesting if you're a fan like me.
But that's just the first 7 tracks. After that we are treated to some demos and outtakes. And these are also well worth hearing. Take, for example, "Soldier of the Heart". The version from Heart Food is one of my least favorite of Sill's songs, sounding like a silly throwaway compared to the songs it's surrounded by. But this demo version is revelatory. The vulnerability in her voice is so raw and real it's heart-wrenching. In fact, several of these solo demos ("The Pearl", "There's a Rugged Road") rival or surpass their official versions, making this an essential album for any Sill fan. - So happy to add this one to the collection. If you find it sub $70, pull the trigger! It’s essential for any fans of Judee.
- Fantastic lp set...worth it for the heavy stoughton cover alone but the music and quiet pressing make this an essential purchase for fans and admirers of her music. The selections can be found on the Rhino Handmade CDs from some years back and current EU two disk comp., but hearing the music in a high quality vinyl edition is a treat. Get a copy while still available at reasonable prices. Limited to 1296 copies!
