Reviews
- Decent mid-era Helloween, just not great like BETTER THAN RAW
Released in 2000, THE DARK RIDE is the ninth album by Germany's Helloween, the follow-up to my personal favorite opus of the band, the dynamic BETTER THAN RAW (1998). The first two proper songs (not including the irrelevant intro) are typical Helloween happy metal, which I generally don't like unless the song is done in a way that sparks interest. The next two songs, however, take a melancholy turn with the start/stop modern riffing of "Escalation 666" and the moody "Mirror, Mirror."
"If I Could Fly" is the standard 'hit' of the album while the melodic "Salvation" aims for an epic and ain't bad. "The Departed (Sun is Going Down)" returns to darker territory while "I Live for Your Pain" starts like it was influenced by "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but throws in guitars with more bite and a catchy chorus. The speedy "We Damn the Night" is quite good & hooky while "Immortal" is a pensive ballad. The album closes with the marathon title track.
While not exceptional, like BETTER THAN RAW, or as good as GAMBLING WITH THE DEVIL (2007), this is still worthwhile disc if you like Helloween's style.
The twelve songs clock-in at about 52:40 minutes. The version I have includes the quality bonus track "The Madness of the Crowds," which is speedy & thrashy and runs an additional 4:14.
