- Edited 9 years agoFor years I've heard BJH referred to as a "Mellotron band", and Woolly Wolstenholme as one of the great Mellotron players. But when I hear their albums, I only hear Mellotron on a couple songs each per album, and the rest using strings (including Robert John Godfrey's involvement in the early albums). Also for the longest time, I was having difficulty identifying the sound of the M300, the model Wolstenholme was most well-known for using. But if you want insane amounts of Mellotron, or that BJH album that made them something of a "Mellotron" band, you should look no further than this 1974 Live album! The band couldn't afford a real orchestra on the road, so Woolly Wolstenholm just goes hog wild on the Mellotron, just about every song uses it. The band does a fantastic job at "Galadriel", given how much real strings were used on the original, this version doesn't sound too drastically different. The music on this album concentrates on the albums Once Again, And Other Short Stories, Baby James Harvest, and their (then) latest effort, Everyone is Everybody Else. For some reason or another, no material on their debut makes it here, which I can't understand why. This album is probably the most Mellotron-laden album I have in my collection. Oh yeah, this proves the band was able to hold their own live, and without an orchestra, so this album is a must if you like BJH.
