Kayah – Kayah

After so many years of “hopeless devotion” to the artist's music, it is somehow unpleasing, yet releasing, realizing that what’s the worst component of this album is neither the (Porter and Black-penned) music, nor the lyrics (Zembaty’s idea of a concept song cycle about a hurt, unsatisfied and vindictive woman could, still, stand the test of time), not even the somehow flat production or the instrumental performance (marked by valuable cameos by Soyka or his longtime collaborator Zbyszek “Uhuru” Brysiak), but Kayah herself.
Glad she found her way to more organic and suitable sound, eventually.

Note that the (sung in English) CD edition (Rogot – MPG 003) offers a SLIGHTLY better dynamics and sound panorama, resulting from the very digital nature of the mastering, since the LP was pressed rather badly on a poor vinyl (a not-so-rare state of the art in the late-80s catalogue of Polskie Nagrania, sadly). The rather pretentious addition of almost identical, lengthy semi-soothing harp and flute-centred instrumentals "Intro" and "Coda", probably thought out as intriguing and value-adding, does nothing but irritate.
