Reviews
- The best way to listen to the CT is to get NM copies of the original vinyls, clean them well, and play them on a nice system. Period.
- Some of this material has been *severely* remastered. Whether that's good or bad is in the eye of the beholder; digital recording and mastering techniques are still improving year over year, and to me the Cocteau Twins' original albums sounded muted, squashed by too much headroom - a hangover from analog mastering standards.
I don't know many fans who were happy with Robin Guthrie's work on the 4AD reissues in the early 2000s - there are endless threads online complaining about them, and I never bought any of them after a cursory listen. Every one is a blown-out mess.
Treasure Hiding was mastered at Abbey Road by Alex Gordon from the original tapes, and approved by Robin Guthrie. To my ears, Alex has substantially improved on the original editions, which suffered from the usual 80s/90s V-shaped EQ - all bass and treble, overreacting to the historic mid-range sound of vinyl. Milk & Kisses never sounded right to begin with, and while it's *much* fuller now, I'd say Alex has polished a sneaker.
If you're a massive Cocteaus fan, you've undoubtedly already sourced all of the "rarities" here, which are less fiddled with, but appear to be remastered. I have Volume 15 for "Circling Girl," which is probably the last great Cocteau Twins song IMO. It sounds slightly stronger as presented here, as do the Snow EP and Mark Clifford of Seefeel's Otherness remixes.
The bulk of the remastering clearly focused on the proper LPs; the value here is the opportunity to hear Four-Calendar Cafe in a completely new, kaleidoscopic glory promised by the album cover. - I couldn't find any details of remastering on the records, booklet or boxset, are you sure it's remastered? Or is it the remastered editions of the two studio lp's made some years ago (2006)? Nothing is written, and it seems to sound like the old original versions.
- A missed opportunity. The channels are reversed on Four-Calendar Café and the remastering is overly bright throughout.
