Reviews
- Edited one year agoDisappointing and bizarre that some tracks are edited in half when there's 12-13 minutes to spare on CD2. At the Heart of It All completely loses its dark appeal. When you start editing your own tracks down, it feels like you're making it known that you made repetitive music.
I think CD1 eventually sounds way too repetitive because most of the remixes on CD1 have an ambient tone layered on top. CD2 is way more beat oriented and not as similar sounding track by track and probably the better of the 2. I didn't notice the lower quality mp3 squishiness that much on the tracks some have complained about, but probably a bunch of these songs would sound a lot better with a high bitrate remastering. - Many years i hardly listened to 26 mixes for cash.
Mainly do to CD1, which i really don`t like.
But CD2 is amazing!! - saw this on vinyle recently, does somebody knows if that version of the lp exist on that format, its maybe a bootleg btw
- Pearls before swine. Beautiful and comprehensive collection of experimental remixes. Well worth the price. It might take a while to wrap your head around some of it but this collection is a great look into the many versatile styles of Aphex. Most of the tracks are unrecognizable from the originals which in many cases is for the best.
- Like Booj1Boy and others have said, the Philip Glass–Heroes (Aphex Twin Remix) could be better. I bought my copy on holiday in 2003 or 2004 and discovered that when I got home that there was annoying glitch on that track 5. I'm still looking for a better pressing of the track - or genuine early generation 24bit wav or flac file. Today, I noticed that on all the pressings I could see that the track is reduced in time from 5:32. So, questions - 1. do the 5:18 reduced length versions just simply miss out the long silence which follows the fade out/end of the music? 3. Is the full length 5:32 available on any media anywhere? 4. Does anyone know of sources of that track 5 which do NOT have the glitch on track 5?
- The whinging about this set is funny. It's like complaining that your perfectly cooked meal arrived on too small of a plate or that your vintage bottle had a bit or cork in it. The bits that folks seem to be most worked up about continue to be the most interesting as the years move along. History always favours the winners.
- This compilation was in my player for weeks back when it came out. I heard it quite a long time (long enough to memorize several turning points in the music even)- why I say that? Because I was pretty surprised when I bought all original CDs these remixes are lifted from. As an entry to Aphex' remix works and his diverse range of recreations this is a good preview but sadly nothing more.
One problem is that several tracks have been edited to fit the 2xCD edition. Compared to the original remixes this interrupts the flow of the reworks to a large degree. A way more serious point- some tracks are sourced from low bitrate MP3s. "Heroes (Aphex Twin Remix)", "Your Head My Voice (Voix Revirement)" and "Deep In Velvet (Aphex Twin Turnips Mix)" are somewhat up-mastered to disguise the poorly encoded origin. Bowies rework is shrouded in heavy compression to fill the sonic gaps left by the low MP3 codec resulting in a blown-out bass. Compare it to the original Japan MiniCD and you will see why the 26 Mixes-version is subpar.
The Saint Etienne remix suffers from harsh frequencies whereas the unscathed rework on the CD sounds more balanced.
The Boa remix is taken from a vinyl copy audible at the start of the track. Also here compression reduces the joy hearing the version.
If you are able to track down the original CDs with the remixes- go ahead and do yourself a favour. - Edited 5 years agoSome interesting comments here. I think that there is some really great tracks on this comp... the baby ford, flow coma rmx, both nin mixes, gentile people ect.... some slightly anti-climactic stuff, but something different here for sure and probably something for everyone. Even a few dance floor bangers to even things out a bit... ;)
- Track 5, the Bowie/Phillip Glass Heroes remix, is sourced from a poorly encoded MP3 that's had the audio channels reversed, a nasty glitch at 1:47, and it's poorly edited.
