This compilation was in my player for weeks back when it came out. I heard it quite a long time (long enough to memorize several turning points in the music even)- why I say that? Because I was pretty surprised when I bought all original CDs these remixes are lifted from. As an entry to Aphex' remix works and his diverse range of recreations this is a good preview but sadly nothing more.

One problem is that several tracks have been edited to fit the 2xCD edition. Compared to the original remixes this interrupts the flow of the reworks to a large degree. A way more serious point- some tracks are sourced from low bitrate MP3s. "Heroes (Aphex Twin Remix)", "Your Head My Voice (Voix Revirement)" and "Deep In Velvet (Aphex Twin Turnips Mix)" are somewhat up-mastered to disguise the poorly encoded origin. Bowies rework is shrouded in heavy compression to fill the sonic gaps left by the low MP3 codec resulting in a blown-out bass. Compare it to the original Japan MiniCD and you will see why the 26 Mixes-version is subpar.
The Saint Etienne remix suffers from harsh frequencies whereas the unscathed rework on the CD sounds more balanced.
The Boa remix is taken from a vinyl copy audible at the start of the track. Also here compression reduces the joy hearing the version.

If you are able to track down the original CDs with the remixes- go ahead and do yourself a favour.

Some interesting comments here. I think that there is some really great tracks on this comp... the baby ford, flow coma rmx, both nin mixes, gentile people ect.... some slightly anti-climactic stuff, but something different here for sure and probably something for everyone. Even a few dance floor bangers to even things out a bit... ;)

Track 5, the Bowie/Phillip Glass Heroes remix, is sourced from a poorly encoded MP3 that's had the audio channels reversed, a nasty glitch at 1:47, and it's poorly edited.

The Bowie/Glass remix is one of the most remarkable things I've ever heard and showcases that RDJ is as adept at throwing up stunning modern classical/avant-gardism as he is programming "clever" and "techy" beat grids for kit geeks to dribble jealously over; I get frightful goosebumps every time I hear it. People that think it sucked have no real perception of the true boundaries of music, time and space.

I just dug cd one out of an old stash and have been listening to it all week. Hadnt heard these tracks in years. After checking this page for the tracklisting started reading the comments and noticed that no one likes the bowie/glass remix. I thought that track was incredible! The stark edits on bowies vocals are masterful. Considering who the original artists were, i imagine he got paid the most for the remix too. Im not sure why, but that makes me like the track even more. A definite standout on the compilation. Once upon a time Aphex twin was known for confounding expectations and i hope there are others out there who feel like he ruined a classic song.

This compilation was a big downer, almost a textbook example of missed opportunities. There may be reasons why some remixes have been left out (although I can't come up with something better than just legal mumbo jumbo), but it's a disgrace that seven tracks have been edited. And then you have tracks like Windowlicker Edit or the SAW original mix, that don't even fit into the concept of this compilation. Needless to say, the scarcity of information in the booklet (don't even want to mention the lame artwork) make "26 Mixes For Cash" look like the cheap and hasty effort the sarcastical title meant it to be.

What it should have been:
- ALL the remixes
- NO other "rare" tracks (because there are plenty enough to fill their own compilation)
- NO edits, put it on 3 CDs
- booklet with background information and anecdotes, like the funny story about the Curve remix, or even comments by the remixed artists

In short: A compilation that even RDJ himself can be proud of instead of "26 Mixes For Cash" proving him right that leaving Warp was the best thing to do.

A mixed bag of remixes/collaborations by Aphex Twin. A few of them are genuinely brilliant; the rest is a toss-up (depends on whether or not you like the artist that he's remixing).

This is a loose collection of tracks remixed by Aphex Twin. Within Richard D. James' body of work it is certainly stands out as one of the most boring. With that said none of the tracks are that bad, more like mediocre.

I agree that the phillip glass track kinda sucked, I liked the effort though(gotta love those strings). But for pete sakes! almost every other track on this Cd was brilliant. I had always heard of Aphex twins destruction of tracks when he remixes them, so I kinda didn't want to listen to them. But i'm so glad i did, because it's almost like 26 original songs! 26 new songs! This is impressive stuff and is yet another addition to the Aphex/AFX collection. BRAVO.
