I love Jarboe, bougth a lot of stuff from his personal website from Europe and saw her live at least 5 times! This is the only Jarboe's Album I own original and which I'm not able to listen. This collaboration has something that really disturbs my ears. Even if I tried to reconsider it dozens and dozens of time, I think this is the worst Jarboe's work to date. It is surpassed by a landslide by "Unprocessed, Wabi Sabi, Zen Jazz, Dreams", just considering her minors works! It hurts me giving just 2 stars to an Album in which Jarboe is involved. But this is the only one I really don't get! Her voice is incredible as always, but the production and the music completely overwhelm her voice(in a bad way). If you have to invest money in Jarboe's piece of work, look somewhere else for her Masterpieces(Anhedoniac, Disburden Disciple,Mahakali,Alchemical,Illusory, just to mention a few)

On J2, Jarboe’s choice of song form is the mantra while her repertoire of vocal techniques includes ululation, vocalization, whispers, yodeling, glottal effects and laughter. These fit the soundscapes of Justin K Broadrick to a T. His enchanting rhythms and layers of drones, guitars, keyboards, piano and organ entwined with ambient electronics permit the fullest expression of Jarboe’s vocal exploration.

The two overtly ritualistic pieces are the most exploratory and the most challenging. ‘Decay’ is a blueprint of darkwave yodeling with a middle eastern flavor and demeanor of doom over a turbulent drone of bass distortion. On ‘Tribal Limo’, bursts of abrasive ululation punctuate a pulsating torrent of rhythm and melody over an undercurrent of psychedelia. Of a disconcerting form, the ululation at times resembles the gobble of the wild turkey.

‘Let Go’s processed vocals and slow tempo give it a somewhat anguished air. The piece appears to be an adaptation of those Swans ballads of quiet intensity like ‘In My Garden’ on the Children of God album. The minimalist lyrics are expressed in a bluesy delivery of repeated phrases, that also holds true for ‘Magick Girl’ which approaches ‘normality’ as a mid tempo guitar rock excursion.

Great fun emerges on ‘Romp’ with its catchy riffs, swirling synths and voice proliferation. At first, there’s only the rhythmic juxtaposition of laughter and expressions of dismay, but soon the vocals erupt in colorful strands of coloratura, whispers, ululation and Sprachstimme. The array of elaborate leaps, runs, staccati and trills go overboard, however, to take a dissonant turn to malice, madness and disintegration.

After a lengthy symphonic introduction, the final piece, ‘8mmsweetbitter,’ unfolds in graceful arcs of synth, somber piano chords and stately electro beats. The most atmospheric of all the tracks, it’s also the most melodious. Entering belatedly, Jarboe’s dreamy vocals caress the music with a farewell blessing. The spiritual undertone of this splendid composition remains tangible long after the last notes have faded
