Reviews
- Edited 5 months agoThe music is outlaw country, but the spirit is as rock n' roll & punk as it gets. Cash on this record is a punk the whole way through. From a purely music history standpoint, this album is absolutely fascinating, as it proves in real time the lines between country, rockabilly, rock n' roll and punk are far more blurred than we think. It's as much a spirit as it is the sound of the music. What on earth could be more hardcore than playing a show in the most notorious and horrible prison in American history? Few bands would dare go inside the walls of a prison. Credit to Cash, he was a well-off celebrity, but hardly had the ego that usually comes with one, and played multiple free shows for the rejects of society to give them just a little happiness inside hell on earth. Yeah I'm sure plenty of them deserved to be there, but I'm also sure plenty of them didn't, maybe in there for simple possession of a drug or stuff like that. Anyway, it's one of the most important records ever recorded in human history, hands down.
- Can someone please post a picture of so called "heart" on the back cover? I'm having a difficult time believing there is a heart. I think it's a "6." Please prove me wrong.
- I have this record with matrix number on label and stamped 0xsm136060 1c but there is no heart on the back cover, only a number (6). Bought used from a flea market. Sounds like the sleeve is from a different pressing? Any ideas?
- Johnny Cash is a compelling storyteller with an amazing natural delivery. This may be his very best live set, performed in front of a captive audience (you knew that was coming). Come for the songs but stay for the stage patter which adds a fun element to the show.
Second set features June Carter on "Jackson", "Give My Love To Rose", and "Greystone Chapel", a nice change up.
This pressing sounds amazing, super clean and no issues.
You must have this record in your collection, period. - Too much Johnny Cash & all the songs sound the same, but this is a very enjoyable listen. If you only want one release from him, this is it.
- Edited 2 years agoBig screen epic from mid 60's penned by Maurice Jarre...Best moments are when the racing is screened up there with the pounding theme blasting in the background...But there were also poignant times with shots of flowers in the field and gushing love sentiments everywhere...In some ways the soundtrack is a bit stilted but that was the way 60's flicks went down...So hop into the seat, belt up, and take your ears back to "964 as we enjoy the big race, "Grand Prix"...
- By far one of the best albums ever made. If you like country or outlaw country this is the perfect album for you!
- The sound quality on this pressing is just awesome. I feel this record really engages me as the listener more so than any other live album I've listened to, and Cash's ability to get you to step into the shoes of the characters in his songs is something truly special.
