This Suicide compilation of "greatest tragedies" features bands (mostly) from Melbourne and has long been regarded an Australian punk collectible. Although it has some great tracks it could be described as a little patchy. For me the only really stand out track is the swampy edgy Planet on the Prowl by The Negatives (pre Moodists / Sacred Cowboys) and it is only available on this compilation. Some lesser highlights might include the following - Wanna Be Ya Baby by Teenage Radio Stars (pre Models), a track from back when James Freud's punk credentials outweighed his hairstyle credentials; Blonde & Bombed by Jab (Ash Wednesday / Bohdan X); Baby Come Back by The Survivors, the A side of their only & rather rare single (also included is the flip side); Boy Hero by Boys Next Door (Birthday Party / Nick Cave), the excellent B side of their debut single (the far from excellent A side Boots is also included). Exclusive to this compilation is Masturbation Generation, but these Boys Next Door tracks illustrate that they were only a good band until Rowland S Howard joined, then they became a truly great band (compare the two sides of the Door Door LP for further evidence of this). Playing this LP recently I stumbled upon Valium by X Ray Z which I think is far superior and more grungy than their other rather pointless offering Three Glorious Years. Maybe i used to pull the needle off in disgust when that played and rarely made it to Valium, the better track.
Overall, its a worthy addition to any collection. The original was pressed in white vinyl and the cover is iconic.
Please note that most tracks were recorded at the Casualty Ward.
