- Leroy Burgess: “In 1973....
The year of my 20th birthday, my Black Ivory brothers and I were in Los Angeles for the Kwanzaa Records signing. While there, we spent a good amount of time at our friends, The Sylvers', home.
At one visit, Leon and James practically snatched me out of the car.. to hear this amazing record called "Tell Me Something Good". They already 'had' me, by informing me it was a Stevie Wonder composition. Then, they put the 45 on the record player and stepped back to watch my reaction.
This voice filled the room... "You ain't got no kind of feelin' inside". I closed my eyes, to hear it better.. and kept them closed until I could hear the scratchy pops, after the record's fade. When I opened them, the brothers Slyvers were looking at me, smiling goofily. They KNEW what I was going to say.
"Who's the girl singing?"
"Chaka Khan", they replied simultaneously.
That was the exact moment the love affair between her voice and my ears began. To date, it hasn't ended.“
