Reviews
- It's fun to go back to this duo's debut when they have matured so well in the third album. This is maybe the most comercially successful chiptune album, with Zomby at its toes (and some parts in the Postal Service album), and of course it is one of those electronica album embraced by hipsters, loved, and then quickly discarded. Look at the cover: hipster paradise.
But there is some good in these songs. The songs try to blend electropop with punk attitude, with harsh keyboards and a voice from Alice that is sometimes gentle and sometimes shouty. There are big hits, like "Crimewave" or "Untrust Us", there are noisy short tracks, but it is mostly an electro album not very far from Adult.
And then there are my favourites. "Reckless" is a wonderful videogame tune, something that starts like a Rastan Saga soundtrack and with just some added elements become an epic electro tune. And then there is "Magic Spells", the most chilled moment of the album and maybe the most beautiful moment of their career.
Their debut is uneven, but not only has hints of their later works; it has also a good electronica album. Don't let the hipsters fool you about his.
