I agree with yasdnir below that The Lion and the Cobra is "probably her very best". IDNWWIHG is a close second, but for me does come second because it doesn’t have Troy. The LionCobra cover portrait says it all.

The wonder of the LionCobra album is how Sinéad couples her perfect voice, with her creative lyrical abilities to produce an intensely personal album. Sinéad sang her heart out at this time in her life and wrote lyrics matching the events which had shaped her. Not only is this album a triumphant statement of her life, but a big question to issues which continually need to be addressed.

After this first album there is a lot of good music. Nothing Compares is beautiful, she makes it her own (but it was written by some other person . . .), she produced many singular songs for movies etc and there was much theological exploration. But a significant amount of Sinéad's life was spent on RECOVERING from people's unconsidered (and often violent) action’s and reaction to her. A much due respect and understanding could have made her life easier.

In some respects it is surprising Sinéad continued to need religion. I guess her belief was that strong . . . with her strong religious faith in mind, it would have been good if ‘the powers that be’, and the Vatican in particular, could have returned some of her devotion: acknowledge and respond, recognise Sinéad’s statements and demonstrations in relation to her individual struggle with life and resulting trauma. Religion should not be aloof and ignore suffering, it should be understanding and ultimately forgiving. Right?

I don’t know too much, it seems to me Sinéad got too stubbornly caught up in trauma, the need for love and ‘religion as hope’, maybe another way of putting it is – ‘that’s her song’ – and she did sing it beautifully. But there are many who choose not to listen and they need to be brought to account.

Probably her very best, for Jackie and Troy alone. These are strong intelligent songs considering how old she was then. Music is hilariously 80s

Interestingly, my copy of The Lion and the Cobra's sleeve came stuffed with photocopied news clippings about Sinead and there was a 2-page press release from the record label, so the LP seems to have been given out as a promo copy to the media. And all these years later these various materials survived completely intact -- a little time capsule in an LP!
