Superb esoteric haunting majestic acid-psych-folk full of airy instrumentation & fragile quasi-melodic background noises. Wonderful treasure jewel of 60's music.
    Just dandy!

I discovered this via my dad's collection thanks to the interesting cover. I'm blown away by it. Phenomenal obscurity.

This is such an amazing album… kind of can’t believe people haven’t “rediscovered” it. Very trippy and beautiful.

THE SUZANNE COVER IS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL IN MY OPINION.

Balaklava was meant to be a great eclectic, etheareal, almost spiritual "not from this Earth" album....yet, the conceptual approach (profoundly telling the story of the beauty of the surrounding world mared by horrors of the men's deeds - partly inspired by Tennison's "Charge Of The Light Brigade") combined with very short playing time led to some unbearable flaws, namely:

1.Trumpeter Landfrey opening track (or better said: a sequence).
              2.Guardian Angel track.
              3.Florence Nightingale track/sequence.
4.Deadly annoying tape rewinding effect directly after Ring Thing track.
5.Trumpeter Landfrey repeated sequence as a closing act.

All these tracks/sequences musically and by atmosphere are extremely distracting.
That filtered "sandy" sound of an old record player in "Guardian Angel" is painful!
Although I love Balaklava and Pearls Before Swine in general, I cannot give any approval to these tracks as I always feel a need to skip these over when listening the album.

Imo the best PBS album. The first was an incredible set of acoustic psychedelia but Balaklava managed to outdo it with its superior sequence of hallucinogenic folk songs. I've been listening to this album for over 30 years and still not plumbed its depths.

Translucent Carriages is dark and deep with its whispered vocals and heavy breathing. Images of April is the ultimate acid-folk construct with its artfully placed swamp noises (they aren't real birds or frogs you know*) and spiralling-into oblivion echoed vocals. Mesmerising stuff. Who knows what Lepers and Roses is about but it's sure got a good title.
I Saw The World is another psychedelic incantation but perhaps a little brighter in mood than the preceding songs I mentioned.

This incarnation of PBS was darker and heavier than subsequent records.... I mean - it's mainly acoustic folk music but the overwhelming impression is like something from the Brueghel painting that adorns the cover.... horror-filled miniatures on the futility of war. After this album Tom Rapp signed with Reprise, and later Blue Thumb, and created a marvellous series of deep and wise records.

                * actually the sound effects WERE recorded in a swamp - but to me it was always like a paranoid LSD illusion.
