VASSVIK
Torgeir Vassvik, the Circumpolar Sámi Soundpoet, is going on! After a successful 2019 world tour in 13 countries, including Romania, Rwanda, South Korea, Canada, UK, Belgium, Germany and all Scandinavia, he is now looking forward to play for your audiences.
The 2019 album "Gákti", released by him and his band VASSVIK on the Norwegian Indie- Label Grappa/Heilo, was enthusiastically received and reviewed, and hit the charts (number 12 Transglobal World Music Charts 07/19, number 5 World Music Charts Europe 09/19).
"The core of the Sámi culture is the animism: everything is connected, everything is alive. Gákti is the often colourful outfit, which we Sámi people are so lucky to have. It has a wider meaning than wearing clothes. It draws a lot of attention to our culture and keeps our identity alive. It protects us, just as the ice shall cover important parts of the earth. My personal Gákti is the music that is deeply rooted in the traditional Joik and the Sámi culture. At the same time I love to create new patterns and designs by undertaking sound experiments and updating the animistic tradition."
Torgeir Vassvik
Torgeir's Joik reveals the deepest vibrations and most beautiful overtones of the human soul, resonating with experimental, playful and groovy expressions on his guitar and frame drum together with saxophones. The culture of the Sámi indigenous people is anchored in Torgeir Vassvik's genes. But the archaic in his projects forms only a starting point for bordercrossings, experiments and modern improvisation.
Now, it is your chance to have this unique artist on your stages and let the music lovers witness the creation of new contemporary sounds out of our most ancient traditions.
