Reviews
- Exclusive dub version of Round Three's Acting Crazy with some vocal tid bits scattered here and there, different from the instrumental and M6 A & B versions.
- I love Alec Empire's submission... I picture Kevin Martin ringing up Alec on a landline back in 1996, "Hey, could do a dub piece for my Virgin comp?" Alec said, "Dub?! I can do only breakcore." "Fine!"
- more forbidding than Macro dub infection but worth the effort, one of volume 2's innovations that i particularly loved were the 2 tracks of dubbed out noise-rock by third eye foundation & (terminal)Cheesecake
- Compilations are, by their nature, varied. But the breadth and depth of this release is simply stunning! As a primer into the world of dub - a term that itself can mean to copy, to add, or to furnish with new sounds - many bases are touched on. The title Macro Dub Infection sounds attention-getting, but rings true. There are hardly any facets of modern music-making that dub has not "infected" with its convivial groove and primary thrust of bass. Chatham/Wheeler's "Altesse" couch jazz in a potent futuristic aesthetic, filled with dark buzzes and rhythms, akin to Miles Davis' _Dark Magus_ only much more listenable. Zulutronic's "A Presente" flip this, embracing pure pop hooks and electro beats. Alec Empire's hugely unsettling "When You've Reached Your Peak" plays off the historical precedent of Jamaican dub (languid, groovy and calming) to give a neckbreaking rush of rhythm. The true highlight must be the unnatural joining of Ice & Palace in "More Brother (Inbred version)". Here alt-country is deconstructed, leaving a vocal shell of nonsensical blues that conjures the image of a frightening & evil backwater. This IS dub, the chameleon-like shifting of one musical form into something totally different.
