This is probably the last great Reactivate album before the series became a full-on trance cheese fest (with the possible exception of Reactivate 13 which I still enjoyed greatly at the time).

Whilst not my favourite of the series, it does contain possibly my favourite track, VDM's "Flowtation", a hands-in-the-air anthem (no matter where I am) that builds up and up and up and up...This is followed up by Transa's classic "Prophase" which suffered from overexposure and whilst something of a seminal track, I think it perfectly showcases the change in style for the next six compilations in the series from a tech-trance warehouse vibe to a cleaner trance sound.

Other highlights for me included "Pipeman", whcih has not aged well, DeDonatis' acid monster "The Sound" (which I'm sure is a rip-off of Equator "Silence"), Reactivate mainstay Pablo Gargano's lush "Trance in Saigon" and then - bloody hell - it finishes up with "Blue Fear" and "Waters", another pair of classic floorfillers.

Whilst the successive compilations were still enjoyable and contained some great tracks, I found they became in general a little formulaic, a little over-produced and consequently lacking an edge. Reactivate 12 though: great album

Encapsulating the time when Trance was moving from underground to mainstream, Reactivate 12 showcases many sublime tracks.

From the older sound (Sunbeam - Arms Of Heaven must clock in at over 160bpm), to the typical 1997 style (such as the pizzicato plucks in Groovebird) through to the more progressive likes of Flowtation (which contains a structure & flair that continued untouched throughout Trance's "Golden Era" 1999-2001), this compilation is a winner.

I still prefer Reactivate 10, it is the best. But that one is a time capsule of an era. Reactivate 12 is a glimpse both ways.
