whilst i do feel the tracks go on for a bit too long and there's barely any melodic hook whatsoever to any of these tunes (i hate how simple the title track is), most of these numbers are about texture and rhythm anyways, and they sure deliver: sounds are grim and scary and the drums are tight as hell. took me a couple of months to realize i was listening to 'Aleph 1' wrong and years after first encountering this im just now questioning if 'The Fifth Column' is also fooling me somehow.

Listening back to it in 2023, this is really sad, even tracks like Aleph 1 which has some melody are basically the same loop repeated 8 minutes over. Back in 1997 this was called intelligent drum and bass, go and figure!
Photek et al were like the Isaac Newton of Drum and Bass, even calling their label Science...

An interesting feature of the CD versions of this, and the single Hidden Camera, is that both seem to feature a vinyl sound effect at the beginning. I don't think for a minute that either CD is a vinyl rip, but it just seems that the label decided they wanted the CD to sound a bit like it.

On the Modus CD, the vinyl effect is present at the start of "Trans 7".

On the Hidden Camera CD, the vinyl effect is present at the start of "Hidden Camera (Static Mix)".
