Reviews
- Evidence: The year is 1998, two years before the anticipated Y2K bug hits, causing what theorists believe to be the end of civilization. Method Man, one of the more popular rappers to come out of the Wu-Tang Clan, plays on this theme on Tical 2000: Judgment Day. The album opens with a parody of American show "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve" that doesn't end well when the ball drops.
Throughout the album, Meth constantly proves why he's got a flow your average rapper would die for, and gives listeners well-crafted songs your girl could swoon over. On "Big Dogs", Method effortlessly mixes witty wordplay with a dash of humour:
'…we Reservoir Dogs, you puppy chow-chow /
Got my mittens on the kitten, lickin it now-now,'
On the song "Torture", he utters one word to form a catchy chorus:
'Torture,… torture,… torture,… m***a****in' torture!'.
Perhaps the only other rapper who could pull this off was the late 2Pac. (Remember that Meth was one of only a few to work with both 2Pac and Biggie in the studio before their demise).
Verdict: On "Tical 2000: Judgement Day", Method Man mesmerizes the listener with his smooth delivery and wicked flow. The dark and sometimes sinister beats are supplied by RZA, Havoc (of Mobb Deep), Erick Sermon, and True Master among others. Standout joints include: "Torture", "Play IV Keeps" "Break Ups 2 Make Ups", and "Judgement Day". Tical 2000: Judgement Day is a must-have as part of any essential rap collection.
