Reviews
- Edited 6 years ago1999 and diggin' was HOT; Blue Note was HOT and the whole Mixtapes circus was on FIRE.
For some reason, I missed this "mix" back in the days. Maybe it was because getting hold of Japanese CDs (which I preferred to the tapes) was difficult. As a consequence, this crept onto my wants list a few years later. Initially, I found it difficult to track one down but then both Amazon and Discogs listed it and copies became a bit easier to find. Problem was that it always demanded steep prices - but that only added to the "must have" classification. In 2016 I saw it at a reasonable price... albeit without the artwork but who cares, as it's all about the music right?
Yes! Damn Right!!! It's all about the music!!!
If you read through the track list, of course they are all classics and whether they get played out or you mixed into a break-tape, this should be enjoyable. But it's not. And it's horrible! !! !!! !!! !!!! !!!!! It's like your far away record dealer back in the days playing you some isht over the phone almost at random. The audio quality over the phone would probably have been better. OMG: How did they record this "mix"? Was this recorded with a karaoke microphone opposite the speakers? I can not figure it out. It's so bad. To make things worse, they then took the two sides of the C60 tape and lumped them together into one CD track. WTF?!?!?!. To add insult to injury the entire "mix" is peppered with the most annoying shout-outs: Some seemingly recorded for this mix (as evidenced by it being referenced by name) and other pre-recorded for other occasion such as the ones by deceased Big L.
Would I have liked it in 1999? I doubt it!
Do I like it in 2016? Hell No!!
Will I keep it for 2017? Certainly not!!!
