Ezekiel Honig gets a bit more granular and post-rock with SURFACES OF A BROKEN MARCHING BAND. The titular "Broken Marching Band" takes a random bit of source material and places it beneath Honig's long synths and slow, loping beat. The rhythm of "A Brief Visual Pattern" has a bit more skip in its step, but it's accompanied a brooding sense of menace in the music itself. The thrumming of "Seaside Pastures Part 2" suggests rolling waves if not pure bucolic bliss, and "Displacement" has Tim Hecker-style stuttering reverb and layers. The two "Material Instrument" tracks morph constantly, introducing crowd sounds as well as various rhythmic elements, and the guitar on "Past Tense Kitchen Movement" suggest a hint of post-rock, and "Epilogue" ends on pure ambience again. Dream-like and subtle.
