"From the slamming Science of "Ricochet," through the jittery Ghost-Rave of "Survival" and the outer-space lover's rock of "Dubbing You," to the manic magic of "Finest Illusion," this collection of early EPs by rave legends Foul Play tracks an Astonishing evolution across barely more than a year. Some of the top tunes to come out of the Hardcore > Jungle > Drum & Bass journey? Yes, but also some of the most thrilling and gorgeous music of the entire '90s.

- A lot of moans here. Honestly I can't understand it. For the money one of the best value purchases you could make. Worth it for Feel the Vibe (Again) and Finest Illusion ... yes it's the mix you want.
Sound quality might not be "great" but I bet it's better than a copy that's been rinsed a thousand times. - Not the loudest of recordings, gain, yes, that works. I would buy the originals, more money yes, worth it for Feel the vibe and others. The final point, i simply cannot see the track names on the vinyl, that small, not ideal for a guy in his late 40's, could be louder? Anyway i sold mine.
- Just recorded my copy to WAV and it actually sounds good! Yeah the volumes are a tad low but thats easy to fix with gain on the mixer.
I also have the originals to compare, they all sound good so maybe some people got unlucky with a pressing issue on the new one?
Im happy to retire my expensive originals and play this LP instead, it only cost £20 :) - Edited 3 years agoId rather have straight reissues of their first two volumes than have them in a mixed compilation format. Squeezing three tracks on one side of a record should be for albums only & only then on 180gram vinyl. I knew the DATs were lost so they could only be sourced from vinyl rips. Beau Thomas has a good reputation for mastering but the pressing could have been better. Sneaker Social club edited the Brothers Grimm classic to favour the new mixes, so i didnt have high hopes with this. Its not a third rate job like Ibiza, but these classic tunes deserve better.
- Great tunes but the pressing lets them down a bit.
It's great to get my hands on all these tunes on pristine vinyl for the 20 quid I paid but as others have mentioned the sound quality isn't what it could be. Even the tunes that are only 2 to a side aren't even pressed as well as they could have been and one of the plates has 3 to a side. I would have paid more for 3 plates and a better pressing which would have made this a definitive reissue. Fortunately I don't enjoy hardcore and oldschool jungle for it's audiophile qualities. Great records, great tunes, but a missed opportunity that falls a bit short of perfection. I shouldn't complain really, I never thought that these would be reissued together and am chuffed to have it in my crate. - Great compilation but sound is a bit distored on few tracks (Finest Illusion is brighest example). Don't know if this is pressing or mastering issue.
- Edited 4 years agoSound quality isn't great, but that seems to be becoming the new standard set by the recent string of shoddy represses we are being inundated with. Finest illusion sounds awful, sorry.
- I compared "Survival" with my original Vol.2 (VG-ish condition) copy - reissue is a bit more forward sounding, a tiny bit less low and top end, overall levels pretty much identical. They seem to have done a good job on this release!
- With a sureshot like this should've really made the effort of spreading the tunes over 3 records. I have all the originals but still bought it, not recognising it was 3 per side. However, I didnt play it yet and if the sound quality is there who am I to judge? Essential release of 2020 I guess and with time will be as sought after just as the Intense tripple pack on Keeping vinyl Alive now is, don't sleep on it.
- Wicked compilation of early hardcore rave power, had only heard the previews and suspected Finest illusion to be the instrumental version, you can picture my enthusiasm when the vocals came crashing in on the 1st verse,, essenttialness..
